A fully-fledged circular economy has newly established, radical strategies that lead to a largely dematerialized economy. However, existing strategies also need improvement to keep materials in the loop as long as possible during the transition period. Think of product-use life extension, reuse, remanufacturing, recycling, etc. Plenty of good examples from across the world could be shared.
A growing group of countries is deciding to close their borders for imports of low-quality waste or second-hand goods. The export, or rather ‘dumping’ of textiles or low-quality plastics is increasingly regulated and enforced. This intensifies the challenge to reduce the production of low-quality waste and to find new, better and more local markets for reusables and recyclables. This session will discuss those evolutions in the international flows of materials for reuse and recycling and explore new opportunities to close loops.
