LIVES, Litter Free Rivers and Streams

Interreg Euregio Maas-Rijn LIVES Litter free rivers and streams

OVAM stimulates the development of a healthy and appealing environment in which we live, work and spend leisure time. Participation in the project ‘Litter free rivers and streams’ [LIVES] addresses the reduction of plastic waste in the Meuse river basin. Plastic litter is damaging our environment and poses danger to public health, the biodiversity, shipping and the landscape. At the moment, there is no EU legislation on this topic, each country and organization deals with the plastic pollution with its own strategy. A successful solution depends on a comprehensive, cross border approach that stops plastics from flowing to the sea. Cross border collaboration is essential as the catchment borders do not match the administrative borders of river states.

LIVES is a project that cares about a litter-free Meuse catchment and is financially supported by the EU (Interreg V-A). The eligible amount is about € 1.5 million, of which EU subsidizes 50%. The purpose of LIVES is to organize a coordinated, cross-border approach to reduce plastic litter in the Meuse basin.
Central to the project are 4 work packages: 1. an extensive analysis of the current waste situation in the river Meuse and its tributaries, 2. taking measures to reduce the amount of waste, such as clean up actions and the installation of five different types of litter traps, 3. making cross-border appointments between governments, and 4. extensive communication to the public. Although there are already various initiatives at the local level, LIVES wants to encourage a more coherent cross-border approach.
